Walter Byrd Obituary

God gave the gift of life to Walter “Jay” Byrd, Jr. on May 26, 1935 in Metter, Georgia to the late Walter Byrd, Sr. and Alice Byrd. God gave rest to his soul on the evening of February 6, 2021.

Walter attended the Candler County Public Schools up to eighth grade where he had to stop school and worked to help support his family.

Walter moved to Melbourne, Florida in the 60’s where he met his wife, Carol G. Byrd. They relocated to Miami, Florida and later united in holy matrimony, October 21, 1972.

Walter was a brick mason by trade. He had a love for building and repairing homes and commercial properties. He worked on several government buildings in Melbourne and Miami, Florida. Later, he retired with Pompano Masonry after completing Continuum On South Beach condominiums South Tower which opened in 2002. After retirement, he couldn’t sit still. He became Mr. FIX It, doing small repair jobs.

In 2007, he and his wife moved back to his hometown of Metter, GA after a battle with prostate cancer. Preceding him in death: one son, Jimmy Ray Lanier; one daughter, Ava Byrd; and a brother, Willie Byrd, Sr.

Walter was a loving family man. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Carol Gene Byrd; 3 children, Terry Byrd (Myra) of Statesboro, GA, Anita Byrd of Rex, GA, and Terra Byrd of Miami Gardens, FL; 4 grandchildren, Terrance Byrd, Christina Byrd, Kelvonte Byrd, and DaMarious Graham; 4 great-grandchildren, 8 siblings and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other sorrowing family and friends.
