Waldo “Penny Boy” Coney was born April 11, 1945 in Statesboro, Georgia. He was the thirteenth of sixteen children born to David and Rhodia Theo Coney. His schooling began at the Piney Grove School in Bulloch County, Georgia. After the family moved to Florida, his education continued at A.L. Lewis Elementary School, Homestead, Florida and Mays Junior High School in Goulds, Florida. Later, he completed requirements and obtained his GED.
He worked as an auto mechanic while training to be a Boxer. He gained many accolades during his boxing career. Following his passion for music, he performed in a local Homestead band as a guitar player, playing in many clubs around the state of Florida. He later played in a gospel group and it was during this time that he gave his life to the Lord.
He never married nor fathered children. He was a very physically active man until his health failed. The loss of physical strength and ability caused turmoil within him. He regained his love for Christ. He became more quiet and humble, as his body and soul surrendered to Christ.
His journey of transitional ascension to Christ came on Friday, February 5, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents and twelve siblings. He leaves to mourn his passing: two sisters, Queen E. Jamison (Leon) and Josie Smith (Willie); one brother, Leo Coney (Patricia) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing will be enforced at the funeral home and private service. We ask that you adhere to all CDC guidelines.
