Syiedah Shabazz Obituary

Syiedah Shabazz, 73, of Jamaica, NY, born Faye Lavern Gould, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2021, after a two-week hospitalization at Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital, Hempstead, NY. She was born January 16, 1948, the second of ten children to John and Otha Lucille Gould in Warwick County (Newport News), Virginia.

Syiedah, known to her family by her nickname, Winnie, attended Way of the Cross and Bibleway churches in Newport News and Hampton, VA with her family and was converted to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ in her youth. She graduated in 1966 from George P. Phenix High School in Hampton, VA where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She began her career in nursing while in high school and, shortly after graduation, relocated to New York to attend nursing school. There, she completed the R.N. program and pursued nursing as a career until retirement.

Syiedah was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lucille Gould, older brother, Lorenzo Gould and long-time dear friend, JoAnne Knight, godmother of her son Kevin.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, Kevin E. James and wife Shawna of Fairfield, Iowa; one granddaughter, N’dea James of Kinston, North Carolina; seven brothers and their wives: John Jr. and Patricia Gould, Chester, VA, Pastor Anthony and Denise Gould, Gilbert, AZ, Larry and Brenda Gould, Metter, GA, Reginald and Cherise Gould, Jamaica, NY, Jerald and Carol Gould, Killeen, TX, Timothy Gould, Jamaica, NY, Kevin and Voncia Gould, Suffolk, VA; two sisters, Gloria G. Gordon, Houston, TX and Clara G. Love, High Point, NC; and a sister-in-law, Tina Gould, San Antonio, TX. Her loss is also mourned by Contessa Haynie, mother of granddaughter N’Dea, long-time friend, Reginald Woel, her Oceanside Care Center caretaker and “adopted daughter”, Tanya Woods, Kevin’s god sisters, Kisha Pacheco, LeShor Bellinger, and Eva Rhodes, and dear friend and neighbor, Edith Payne. Finally, Syiedah leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service will be held, 11:00 a.m., Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Roy L. Gilmore Funeral Home in St. Albans, NY.
