Roger Lee Byrd was born June 29, 1950 to Dock and Lola Byrd in Candler County, Georgia. He attended the public schools of Candler County and attended New Life Baptist Church, with his family, as a child.
In his teenage years, Roger left Georgia and moved to Virginia to find work. He lived in Alexandria, Virginia for many years. There, he was employed by The Miller Construction Company, working to build many of the high rise, skyscraper buildings in Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. While in Virginia, he worked as a taxicab driver. Later, Roger enlisted in the United States Marines. After a period of time, he was honorably discharged. In his later years, Roger returned to his hometown of Metter, Georgia and became a truck driver. Roger resided in Metter until his passing on Monday, January 25, 2021.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Freddy Byrd, James Walter Byrd, Albert Byrd and Andrew Byrd.
Roger leaves to mourn his passing and to cherish his memory: his loving companion, Christine Robinson; one son and his wife, Rodney and Nakita Burgess of Atlanta, GA; three sisters and one brother-in-law: Daisy Byrd Mobley and Judy Byrd both of Savannah, GA, Ruby Lee and Mack Stanford of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Edward C. Felton of Syracuse, NY; three granddaughters, Kiarra Burgess, Kaydence Burgess and Kayla Burgess; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
