Mae "Mary" Sue (Roberson) Byrd

Mrs. Mae S. Byrd, the daughter of the late Leonard (Lint) and the late Cassie Roberson, was born December 22, 1949 in Candler County, Georgia. She departed this life on Monday, March 14, 2016 at Antelope Valley Hospital, Lancaster, California.

At an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and joined Steephill Missionary Baptist Church, Metter, Georgia. Mae was a graduate of Tattnall County Industrial High School class of 1967, Reidsville, Georgia. Mae also graduated from IBM School in Jacksonville, Florida as a Key Puncher Operator in 1968. She was employed for over forty years as an Aircraft Maintenance Scheduler with the Department of the United States Air Force, Headquarters 412th Test Wings (AFMA), Edwards Air Force Base, California. 

On June 6, 1970, Mae married the love of her life of forty-five years, Mr. Harrel (Harold) Byrd at her membership church, Steephill Missionary Baptist Church. To this union one son was born, Byron B. Byrd.

Mae, affectionately known to many as “Mary” was extremely active in her community working with children and the elderly. Because of her love for people, she founded the “Teen Job Bank” in California City, California. There have been many lives enhanced because of her love and dedication to see the youth succeed in life. 

She leaves to cherish many precious and loving memories; her husband, Harrel Byrd; one son, Byron B. (Carolyn L. Shields) Byrd, all of California City, CA; one foster son, Kodi R. (Tashonalaki) Jackson, of Torrance, CA; five sisters, Rose (James) Roberson – Philpot, Gadsden, AL, Catherine (Reverend Frank, Jr.) Jones, Midway, GA, Betty (John) Roberson - Jeffreys, Providence, RI, Barbara (Henry) Roberson-Cannon, Atlanta, GA, and Teresa Roberson-Branch, Cobbtown, GA, seven grandchildren,  numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
