Mae Evelyn Williams

Mae Evelyn Williams (Doll), daughter of the late, General Williams, Sr. and Marietta Wilson Williams, was born in Metter, Georgia on April 25, 1927.  God called Doll home on Thursday, January 21, 2021 after a bout with an illness.  She was resting comfortably at home in Metter, Georgia. 

Doll attended Candler County Training School.  She then went on to attend Tennessee State University and later transferred to Florida A&M University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Education. 

Shortly after moving to Newark, NJ, she began to teach in the elementary school system.  Upon returning back to Metter, GA, Doll started her 32 year teaching career in the Candler County School system.   She was well respected by colleagues and the students.  In many cases she had taught 3 generations of family members.  Teacher extraordinaire!  Teaching for Miss Williams was not a job, it was a lifestyle that flowed into everything she did – church, home, life!  Once presented with a class of students that were below grade level, she diligently and lovingly worked with each child and brought each one up to grade requirements, with some being above grade level!  She received many awards for education and was a pillar of the community.  She remained active with the Candler County Retired Teachers’ Association for many years after retirement, still involving herself with the students. 

Doll was an active, life-long dedicated member of St. Luke Independent “former A.M.E.” Church.  God being the center of life, she was a devout studier of the bible and was not limited to familiarizing herself with various religions.  She taught Sunday school each week for many years and remain active within St. Luke until her sickness. 

Doll was an avid reader and created her personal library with books stacked from floor to ceiling. She was especially interested in vitamins and home remedies.  If you named a discomfort, she could tell you what to take for it, if she did not know at the time, she would research it and return with an informed answer. 

Doll loved her family, although she was the youngest daughter, she took on the roll as one of the family matriarchs.  In one way or another she was always helping family members.  She was the perfect person to confide in and she gave solid advice. 

Mae Evelyn Williams (Doll) leaves to embrace her most precious memories; a loving sister, Thelma Williams Bell (95 yrs. old) of Newark, NJ; nieces, Gardenia Bell Doggett, Tracey Bell and Iris Lewis; nephews, Stanley Bell and Joseph Williams, Jr.  Doll had a host of great nieces and nephews;  Joseph P. Williams, Jr., Iyonda Bell, Genovis E. Baker, Ray Shawn Handsom and Monique Handsom, also loved by a host of beloved relatives and friends.  

Doll was preceded in death by her three brothers and sister:  General Williams, Jr., Ira J. Williams, Joseph P. Williams and Loree Williams.  

Special Dedication:

The family acknowledges Stanley Bell for his devotion and untiring care of his aunt through this difficult time.  It was comforting to know that you were there with her.
