Lester Lee Newkirk affectionately known as “Cato” was born May 10, 1963 to Willie Floyd and Alma Ruth Newkirk in Candler County, Georgia. He passed away Sunday, April 26, 2015.
Lester attended Candler County schools where he played basketball and became a fan of the arts, especially drawing and writing, which birthed his pen name, Swenson. He collected comic’s books, liked fishing and spent time with his dogs, especially his beloved Sheba. He appreciated cars, in particular his lime green Pontiac LeMans. He cherished spending time with family and friends and when the music came on you could find him on the dance; who can forget all the turns, dips and splits. He enjoyed sports and was a long time Washington Redskins fan. Lester graduated from T. C. Williams High School class of 1981, in Alexandria, VA where he resided until relocating back to his hometown Metter, Georgia in 2014.
Lester grew up learning about how wonderful Jehovah God and his son Jesus Christ are and upon his return home started studying with Jehovah Witnesses and going to the Kingdom Hall. He was making changes in his life and working toward becoming closer to Jehovah.
He was preceded in death by his Father Willie Floyd Newkirk.
Lester leaves to cherish fond memories his mother Alma Ruth Newkirk and eight siblings: Floyd Sr., Willie, Joyce (Larry), Jacqueline, Dwight Sr., Janet, Alma (Raymond), and Victoria, a host of loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Also an extended family in the Washington Metropolitan area who unconditionally cared for and supported him, the Byrd and Miller-Banks families.
