Elbert Chappel Obituary

  Deacon Elbert Chappel was born October 11, 1939 to Ezekiel and Nellie Gordon Chappel in Metter, Candler County, Georgia.  He entered into eternal rest on Friday, July 12, 2024 in Statesboro, Georgia.    He attended the public schools of Candler County and he resided in and around Candler County for the entirety of his life. He was married to the former Laura Taylor Hendrix, who preceded him in death. 

      At an early age, he joined Lakeside First Baptist Church, Metter, Georgia under the leadership of Reverend Eddie Brooks.  He was a very faithful  member for more than sixty years.  Through the years, he set on various committees, sang in the choir, served as choir president, and was given placement on the deacon board.  He served as Chairman of the Deacon Board for over twenty years. Deacon Chappel was active in the Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Association and served as Treasurer, on the Time and Place Committee, the Enrollment Committee and Chairman of Congress of Christian Education. He was also a past president of the Middleview Singing Festival.

      Deacon Chappel’s life employment was in the lumber industry.  He retired from Louisiana Pacific Lumber Company in Statesboro, Georgia. 

      Deacon Chappel was an outdoorsman , who loved fishing, hunting, gardening and the game of baseball.  His favorite baseball team was the Atlanta Braves.

      Along with his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two stepsons. He is survived by, one son, Michael (Genevieve) Chappel; two stepdaughters, Trudie (Joe) Legree and Joyce Byrd; three stepsons, Bernard Hendrix, Jr. , Carl Hendrix and Kenneth Hendrix; special friend, Delores Harden; several other family members, his church family and friends.
