Bertha Mae “Hagan” Cobb (also known as “Boot”) was born on February 10, 1924 in Claxton, GA, to Anders and Vandella Hagan. She was the sixth of eight children. On October 18, 2015, Bertha went home to join her husband, Penton Cobb, parents Anders and Vandella Hagan, daughter, Mazie L. Mercer and son-in-law, Johnny Benjamin.
Bertha attended the public schools of Claxton, GA. In 1936, Bertha married the love of her life, the late Penton Cobb of Claxton, GA. Upon their marriage, they had 8 children: Curtis, Bernease, Mazie, Bettye, Eddie Mae, Barbara, Frances and Darien. In addition to raising her children, she opened her family and home to family members and others who needed a place to live. Bertha has lived the majority of her life in the Claxton and Tattnall area of Georgia.
In 1936, Bertha became a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Register, GA. While attending, she served in the Mission’s Auxiliary. In 1976, she joined St. Christopher Catholic Church where she served as a devoted member.
She began her professional career with the Reidsville Head Start Program where she drove the school bus and worked as a Cook. Bertha prepared many meals during her tenure as a Cook.
In 1999, she began a career in Companionship where she would sit with elderly people for their family member.
Bertha was a quiet and fun loving person. She loved to hear jokes and took pleasure in spending time laughing with her family. She believed in Sunday dinners and took pride in preparing food for her family, especially her husband. One of her specialty was cooking biscuits. Bertha told stories about how her husband, Penton, taught her how to cook. She shared the knowledge and love that she gained from her Mother and pored it into her children. She kept her children close. She loved to sew quilts and make clothing for her family. She would sit on the front porch shelling peas and shucking corn while she dipped her Peach snuff or chewed her Red Man’s tobacco. Bertha enjoyed many outdoor activities especially tending to her flowers.
She leaves to mourn: her children, Curtis (Anna) Cobb of Reidsville, GA; Bernease Cobb Jordan of Claxton, GA; Bettye Cobb George of Metter, GA; Eddie Mae (Calvin) Riley of Savannah, GA; Barbara Benjamin of Alabama; Frances (Olan) Strickland of Claxton, GA; Darien Cobb of Claxton, GA. She leaves a host of 45 Grand Children, 71 Great Grand Children, 62 Great, Great Grand Children, 6 Great, Great, Great Grand Children and a host of relatives and close friends.
