Mrs. Almeeter Ellis Phillips was born to the late Lizzie Williams Ellis and Mordecai Ellis in Bulloch County, GA on March 22, 1919. She was the youngest of 16 children and educated at the Parrish Station School. On the morning of August 12, 2024, at the age of 105, an angel of mercy came to relieve her of all pain and suffering. She was Candler County's oldest living citizen.
In her younger years, she was a pianist for Thankful Baptist Church choir, where she was a member for over 70 years. Over the span of her life, she was a homemaker, a phenomenal cook, and she also babysat many children. People still talk about how good her soul food was, mainly her fresh creamed corn, peas, stewed squash, fried okra, stew beef and rice, and cornbread. She loved to read the Bible and other inspirational books. Even in recent years, she would continue to read with a magnifying glass. She will always be remembered for her warm spirit and infectious laugh. Her favorite quote to say was, "There's NONE GOOD but the Father."
She was married to the late James Artis Phillips and to this union, six children were born, four precedes her in death: Marion Phillips, Leo 'LC' Phillips, Tommie Joe Phillips, and Theartis Phillips and two grandchildren, Lorenzo Maurice Johnson and Rev. Jay M. Phillips.
She is survived by two children: Mary Jean Johnson and Melvin Phillips; nine grandchildren to include her special grandson and caregiver, LaJaunta Phillips, Trevor Phillips, Tiffany Phillips, Phillip Phillips, Kalita Mainer, Leola Barnes, Jabar Philips, Anthony Phillips, and Rodney 'Peanut' Phillips; three daughters-in-law, Bobbie 'BJ" Phillips, Sarah Phillips and Margaret Phillips; a special niece/sister, Laura Bryant; special children, Mildred Grant, Fannie Donaldson, Hezekiah and Evelyn Campbell, Larry and Brenda Gould and several nieces, nephews, cousins, great- grandchildren and friends.
