Alex James Congers(A.J.), the son of the late Deacon James “Boss” Congers and Norma Dean Brewton Congers, was born August 21, 1931 in Candler County, Georgia. He entered into eternal rest during the early morning of February 29, 2024.
As a youngster, A.J. worked hard on his grandfather, Alex Brewton’s farm while keeping up with his schooling. He attended Charlton Grove Missionary Baptist Church. In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Army. and he was honorably discharged in 1962.
Immediately upon his separation from the Army, Alex made his home in New York, New York. He gained full time employment at the Bronx Veterans Administration Medical Center and part time employment at Terrace Heights Hospital in Queens, Serendity Restaurant in Manhattan. In September of 1993, A.J. retired from the Bronx VA Medical Center with 41 years of service.
During his first marital union, one child was born. Later, in 1986, A.J. was joined in holy matrimony to Linda Maud Brooks of Brooklyn, NY.
After retirement, Alex followed his dream to return to Georgia and he and Linda purchased a home in Augusta, GA. In 1994 he reconnected with Charlton Grove Baptist Church and in 2002 he was ordained a deacon.
A.J. was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and The American Legion.
A.J. was a kind, friendly, fun-loving person. He was spoken highly of by all who knew him. After retiring to Georgia, he enjoyed attending church, fishing , checking up on his father. He was very attentive to the needs of his late father and his sisters, Dot and Bernice.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas Congers; two brothers: Sanford Conyers and Julius Conyers; three sisters, Edna Quaresma, Dorothy Campbell and Bernice Frazier.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife, Linda Congers; one daughter, Terri (Steven) Gambrell, Hephzibah, GA; one stepson, Thomas Price; one brother, Harry (Shirley) Conyers; one granddaughter, Shavoka Congers; three grandsons, Calip Congers, Prentiss Dantzler and Dominic Congers; five great-great grandchildren, Sunjai Congers, Jayden Congers, Amaris Cooper, Christiana Winfree and Rashonda Winfree; a special friend, David Gambrell, Hephzibah, GA; and a host of nephews, nieces, other family and friends.
