John Hubert Byrd, Sr. was born December 24, 1943 in Candler County, Georgia. He was the second oldest of six children born to the late John Brooks and Vera Mae Gibson Byrd.
Hubert, as he was affectionately called, was educated in the public schools of Candler County and he was a 1963 graduate of Candler County Training School. On August 31, 1968, Hubert married the love of his life, the former Dorothy Kennedy. God blessed this union of over fifty-one years with three children.
At an early age, Hubert accepted Jesus as his personal savior and joined Sams Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He served as a dedicated member of the Deacon Board until his health began to decline.
He was employed by the Georgia Department of Corrections as a correctional officer. He worked several years at Coastal Correctional Institute, Savannah, GA. He retired from Rogers State Prison after twenty-eight years of employment.
Hubert was known for his laid back personality. He developed a love for gardening from his mother and he would share his knowledge with anyone who asked. He loved spending time with his family and he took pride in being able to provide for his wife and children.
Hubert went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center, Statesboro, Georgia, surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Byrd Flynn.
He leaves to cherish many loving memories, his wife, Dorothy Byrd, two sons, John Byrd, Jr. (Donna) and Micheal Byrd ( Frances) all of Cobbtown, GA; one daughter, Natasha B. Stevens (Jarmal) of Lawrenceville, GA; four sisters, Annie Pearl Medley of Jamaica, NY, Ernestine Goosby (Edward) of Port Charlotte, FL, Levera Kennedy (Willie) and Loretta Kennedy (Charles) all of Cobbtown, GA.; seven grandchildren, Myesha Thornton, Trey Byrd, LaTonya Byrd, Mya Byrd, Payton Stevens, Dennis Merrion and Kaiden Merrion; eight sisters-in-law and nine brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
