James Orleand Newkirk (Sam) was born on September 28, 1941 in Metter, Georgia to Ollie Smith Newkirk and Tom Newkirk. He departed this life on earth on Sunday, December 16th, 2018 at Inova Alexandria Hospital. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ollie Smith Newkirk, and father, Tom Newkirk; three sisters and seven brothers.
He was affectionately called "Uncle Sam" by the family. Uncle Sam attended public schools in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he was educated. After moving to Alexandria, Virginia, he went to trade school for Rodmen; after which he went to work for Local 201 in Washington, DC, where he retired in 2002.
For many years, Uncle Sam and his brothers operated the famous JJ Boys Seafood Restaurant in Philadelphia, a family business.
He was a loving quiet man and always made sure everyone was fed and happy. He loved and enjoyed cooking and watching the cooking channels. He loved the Redskins and the Eagles football team and college football.
He is survived by his devoted, caring, and loving, wife of 36 years, Ann Newkirk; one daughter, Yolanda (Jerome) Ross; one grandson, Jerome Ross; and one sister, Annie Pearl (Charles) Crawford. Preceding him in death were his sisters, Annie Doris Parrish and Hattie Lillian Montgomery; brothers, Eddie Paul Newkirk, Arthur Lee Newkirk, Thomas Willie Newkirk, Willie Floyd Newkirk, and Charlie Lee Newkirk; father and mother in-law, Joseph and Emma Techell; two sisters in-law, Carolyn (Vaughn) Cooper, Joann (Deboris) Munn, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and dear friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 21, 2018, Greene Funeral Home, 814 Franklin Street, Alexandria, Virginia
Public Viewing: 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
